Getting back to reading after months of being rather busy and also from a lack of concentration. I am reading The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal. It is a coming of age story about a man coming to terms with his own homosexuality. Something in 2016 which may seem mundane to some but this was written at the end of the Second World War when homosexual acts were still illegal in many countries across the world.
Vidal is attempting to show that the gay man goes beyond the stereotypes; portraying his main character as masculine something which contradicts the idea of the day. I am sure it was considered shocking on it’s release in the 40s and I will let you know when I have finished it that if it would stand up to critics today.
